Scotland’s Best Drams?
1 Aug 2024
I have long been an admirer of the Scotch Malt Whisky Society. Headquartered in Leith, Scotland, the SMWS was founded by Pip Hills in Edinburgh in 1983, since when they have been energetically delivering on their mission to source the world’s best whiskies and share them with their members. Today they have over 40,000 members globally, to whom they bring a constant stream of highly flavourful new whiskies via mail order, as well as through their global network of tasting rooms, partner bars, and tasting events.
I have lost count of the number of tasty, complex, intriguing, surprising, sometimes challenging, but always enjoyable drams I have tasted as an SMWS member over the years, and had a great deal of fun exploring whisky of all descriptions with friends and fellow members.
So I was honoured and delighted to be the subject of the monthly ‘Member Profile’ page in the July 2024 edition of the Society’s award-winning online magazine for members, Unfiltered. I was able to share something of my own ‘whisky journey’ as well as talk a bit about what motivated me to devote the last 3 years of my life to researching and writing the biography of one of the whisky world’s most colourful and interesting characters, Joe Hobbs.
